Space Aged Memory Foam In the Summer of 2002, we bought a Tempur-pedic Bed to replace our old beat mattress. These memory foam beds were so comfortable and promised a great nights sleep. For the first year, we slept like babies, except for those warm summer nights where the mattress reflected my body heat and I would wake up in a sweat. Around this time we discovered that my side of the bed was softer than my wife’s. We spun the bed. Over the next couple of years we spun the mattress as my wife’s side would firm up and mine would “hammock”. Eventually, we just started changing sides of the bed every few weeks until neither side firmed up anymore. Look at the pictures on the right. This is a 16-pound bowling ball. The top picture is at the foot of the bed, where the memory foam still functions. The next picture is the same bowling ball in the midsection of the bed; as you can see it sinks nearly two inches deeper into the bed because the foam no longer supports. Now imagine what this does for an adult. We suffered through the back pain caused by the failing support of the bed long enough. It has now been replaced; we’ll let you know how our Select Comfort bed is doing in a few years. We’ve had our Select Comfort Bed for a few months now and so far we are very happy. Both of our back problems have gone away.
